Celebrate Burns Night from your flat

By BzBarlow 11 Jan 2021

January may feel full of doom and gloom but there is something to celebrate - Burns Night!

That's right, Burns Night is just around the corner and it's the perfect chance to celebrate with your flatmates and take your mind off all that's happening in the World at the moment.

For those of your unfamiliar with it, Burns Night happens every year on 25th January as a celebration of the life and poetry of the poet Robert Burns.

Although there won't be the usual celebrations across the city, you can still create your own Burns Night in your flat. Here are some traditional ways to get the full experience...

Tuck into a Haggis Dinner
If you want to be really traditional then Haggis is the way to go - this classic Scottish dish isn't for everybody but you will be able to pick one up from supermarkets if you're feeling adventurous. You could, however, make a warming stew and serve it with another Scottish favourite - neeps (mashed turnip) and tatties (mashed potato).

Finish with some tasty shortbread and a dram of whisky!

Address and Toast the Haggis
Before you can tuck into your dinner, you need to address the Haggis (if you're having one). To do this you'll need to nominate somebody to give all flatmates a rendition of 'To the Haggis' before you all finally raise a glass and shout: The haggis!

After dinner fun
Keep the celebrations going with a games night, some music or maybe a quiz. If you want to be really traditional, you can follow the whole running order with toasts and songs galore!

Sing along to Auld Lang Syne
Finish off your evening by getting everybody to stand and sing a rendition of Auld Lang Syne.

Happy Burns Night!
