Chinese Courses at the Confucius Institute

The Confucius Institute is holding various online classes for all students.

Running for 11 weeks from September 20 - December 3, take a look at the available classes below. If you're interested in joining, click on the booking links per session. 

Chinese Beginners 1 (HSK level 1 Part one) 

The course is held twice a week. Students do not require any prior knowledge in Chinese as it aims to provide you with a basic knowledge of the Chinese economy, aspects of contemporary Chinese human relations and behaviour. The course will also provide a basic knowledge of the Chinese language commonly used in a business environment, students will also learn how to read simple business documents in Chinese. Students will be expected to have mastered by the end of the course, 70-80 commonly used Chinese characters and be able to use some very simple Chinese expressions. Chinese Beginners 1 and Chinese Beginners 2 courses will assist the students in preparing for the HSK 1 exam

Chinese Post-Beginners 1 (HSK level 1 Part one) 

This course is designed for students who have already completed a Beginners Course or have studied Mandarin for at least 60 hours and mastered 150 characters, or hold an HSK 1 certificate. By the end of this course (Chinese Post- beginner 1), students will be expected to have mastered 60-70 new Chinese characters and know how to use slightly more complex Chinese expressions for daily life over a range of topics. The course takes place twice a week.

Intermediate 1/HSK Level 3 Part one 

The course is intended for students who have studied Chinese for about 60-70 hours and have mastered 300 characters. By the end of the course, students are expected to have mastered 150 commonly used wordsand related grammar patterns and enable them to understand the simple reading materials in Chinese Characters. This course will assist the students to prepare for the HSK level 3 exam.

Intermediate 2/HSK Level 3 Part Two 

This course is intended for students who have studied Chinese for about 100- 120 hours and have mastered 450 characters. By the end of the course, students are expected to have mastered 150 commonly used words and related grammar patterns allowing them to understand more complicated reading materials in Chinese Characters. This course will assist students in preparing for the HSK level 3 exam.

Business Etiquette

This course is delivered in English. It introduces the basic structure of the Chinese economy, the business climate in China, essential aspects of contemporary Chinese cultural relations and behaviour and major business etiquette. The course will be a useful guide for those interested in conducting business in/with China. The course will also enhance the students’ ability to communicate effectively with Chinese business people as well as Chinese people as a whole.

Chinese Calligraphy 1 

This course begins with an introduction of Chinese art history and an explanation of how Chinese philosophy influences Chinese art. The course will then move to practical issues including common techniques that relate to using the Chinese soft brushes and ink control.

EVENING SESSIONS

Chinese speaking corner (Beginner and Post-beginner Corner and Intermediate Corner) 

This tutor led activity is a Chinese oral practice session in the format of role play, students will discuss a range of topics, eg introducing yourself and your family, asking for directions, discussion your hobbies, discuss university life, and a wide range of other topics. At the start of each session your teacher will provide and demonstrate expressions for each weekly topic. Participants will then be invited to take up a role and practise, your teacher will be there to provide assistance and to help the conversation flow. There are two sessions each week, the Tuesday sessions will suit participants who are at the beginner and post-beginner level. The Wednesday sessions will suit intermediate level learners.

One to One Classes 

These classes are tailored to the students requirements and are available from Monday to Friday during semester and non-semester time. The classes are arranged upon request. Each booking consists of 5 sessions at a discounted price of £20. The teacher will contact you either by email or via an online meeting to gauge your learning needs in order to develop a teaching plan. This initial discussion is in addition to the 5 sessions.
