Halls FAQs | Edinburgh Campus

By HWResLife 08 Aug 2022

Moving to a new place will no doubt mean you will have loads of burning questions for us.

To help settle any nerves and help you be prepared as possible for living in halls, we've collated some of the most asked questions from new students and put them all in on place...

What's my new address?

Your hall name (Lord Home, Robert Bryson, George Burnett, Lord Thomson), Room number, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh Campus, Edinburgh, EH14 4AS

Where can I do my laundry?

The laundry room is either external to the building or somewhere in your building, if you need directions email reslife@hw.ac.uk. You need to purchase a card or download the app (GooglePlay or AppleStore) to use the machines - it costs £2.90 per wash and £1.70 per dry. Watch this video, it explains everything you need to know!

Where do I collect my post and parcels?

Your post is delivered to your mailbox once a day, Monday to Friday by the Logistics team. Parcels and signed for letters sent through Royal Mail should be collected from the Residence Life hub in Christina Miller hall. Parcel room opening hours are Mon-Sun, 6-8pm.

Do I have a cleaner?

Cleaners clean your kitchen and all public areas every week but it's yours and your flatmate's responsibility to leave these areas in an acceptable condition for staff to clean.

Can I bring my car? What about my bike?

Residents will be unable to park cars on campus so please don't bring your car with you. For more information, please contact carparking@hw.ac.uk.

Bicycles need to be kept in the designated bike shelters and NOT in flats, bedrooms or hallways. You'll need to bring your own chain/lock and we recommend taking out bike insurance.

What do I do if there is a problem in my flat?

Speak to the Residence Life team who are always available for a chat.

What if I'm locked out of my flat?

If you have your student ID card and it is between 8 am and 8 pm (Mon - Sun), you can go to the Main Reception who will issue you with a temporary key or card. If you don't have you have your student ID card and it is outside the time above, please contacting the Safeguarding Services on 0131-4513500 or pick up the red phone or press the enquiry button on your Safezone App.You will be charged £50 fine on your 4th lock outs, and the fine will repeat on your 8th, 12th and so on. So do keep your keys on you at all times!

What if I have a maintenance issue?

Scan the QR Code located in your kitchen to raise the issue - it's the same as the one below! If it's an emergency contact Safeguarding Services on 0131-4513500 or pick up the red phone or press the enquiry button on your Safezone App.
